ROBERT RAMON SOLIS

Officer Ramon Solis

1971-2001

Officer Ramon Solis was born in Roswell, New Mexico in January 1971 and resided in Roswell for his entire life. Officer Solis was a graduate of the New Mexico Military Institute and a member of the United States Army Airborne/National Guard Headquarters Battery and held the rank of Sergeant/E5, 91B20 Medic. Officer Solis was commissioned from the 64th State Police Academy on December 9, 2000 and assigned to Roswell. On October 19, 2001 Officer Solis, along with other State Police Officers, were engaged in a training exercise with Medical Air Transport Inc.  The officers were being trained in setting up a helicopter-landing zone for traffic accidents in remote areas. At the conclusion of the training exercise, Officer Solis, Officer Damon Talbott, and Officer Jennifer Schurman boarded the medical helicopter and flew in a westward
direction from Roswell. At approximately 3:40 p.m. the Roswell District State Police Office was notified that the medical helicopter had crashed approximately six miles west of Roswell. Officer Solis and Officer Talbott died at the crash scene. Officer Schurman and the medical pilot sustained injuries but survived the crash. Officer Solis, Officer Talbott, and Officer Schurman were classmates in the 64th State Police Academy. Officer Solis was survived by his parents. Officer Solis was buried in the South Park Cemetery in Roswell, New Mexico.
