Bob Evetts was born in
Portales, New Mexico on March 17, 1940, and spent his early years in the
eastern part of the state. After completing high school, Bob joined the
U. S. Navy. After his service with the Navy, he joined the New Mexico
State Police and was commissioned on June 2, 1966. His first duty
station was Portales where he served one month and was then transferred
to Tularosa. He stayed in
Tularosa until 1970, when he was transferred to Alamogordo. In 1971, Bob
was transferred back home to Portales and remained there until he was
promoted to sergeant on January 1, 1980, and was then transferred to Raton.

| On December 24, 1982,
Bob was shoveling snow from the sidewalk of the Raton district office
when he suffered a fatal heart attack. Bob, described as a gentle giant
was eulogized by the words, “As for man, his days are as grass. As a
flower of the field, so he flourishes. For the wind passeth over it, and
it is gone. But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to
everlasting. Psalms 103.” Bob was buried in the Portales Cemetery.
