JOSEPH ROBERT EVETTS

Sgt. Joseph R. Evetts

1940-1982

Bob Evetts was born in Portales, New Mexico on March 17, 1940, and spent his early years in the eastern part of the state.  After completing high school, Bob joined the U. S. Navy.  After his service with the Navy, he joined the New Mexico State Police and was commissioned on June 2, 1966.  His first duty station was Portales where he served one month and was then transferred to Tularosa.  He stayed in Tularosa until 1970, when he was transferred to Alamogordo.  In 1971, Bob was transferred back home to Portales and remained there until he was promoted to sergeant on January 1, 1980, and was then transferred to Raton.

On December 24, 1982, Bob was shoveling snow from the sidewalk of the Raton district office when he suffered a fatal heart attack.  Bob, described as a gentle giant was eulogized by the words, “As for man, his days are as grass.  As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.  For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone.  But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. Psalms 103.”  Bob was buried in the Portales Cemetery.
