Mackie C de Baca was born in 1913 and was a native of Clayton, New Mexico. He joined the state police on April 16, 1937, and was assigned to Santa Fe. Mackie was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1941, and served in Germany during World War II as a lineman. He had participated in the D-Day invasion in France and had been awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry in action near Saint Barthelmy, France in August, 1944. His citation read, in part "…for heroic service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States. His heroic action was instrumental in coordinating the movements of units during a critical period. His skill and devotion to duty reflect credit upon himself and the military service…" Mackie was killed in action in December 1944. He was survived by his wife. | |
